I am so excited to have Susan from Organized 31 share one of her organizing posts with all of you. Please welcome her and take a few minutes to stop by her website and see what else she has going on.
The kitchen is the heart of the home, so keeping your kitchen organized makes your entire life easier and less stressful. An organized kitchen helps your family participate more effectively in the kitchen. Hi, I’m Susan from Organized 31 and I’m happy to be here with you because Cynthia is a dear friend and I’ve been a big fan of Feeding Big for several years. Let me share some of my favorite ideas that you can use in organizing your kitchen for free.
I’ve been following Cynthia’s frugal weekly menu plans and her recent frugal tips series closely. I believe life is better when simple and organized, but I also believe that organization shouldn’t break the bank. These are some of my favorite no-cost kitchen organizing tips.
Purge one cabinet each weekend and one drawer each day. I’m willing to bet that you have items you don’t need in your kitchen. Those items are taking up space that you could use more effectively, so you need to purge them. Take the time to evaluate and purge one drawer each night. Critically evaluate each item asking:
Does it still work or is it still good (not past the expiration date)?
Do I use this item?
Do I need duplicates of this item?
Purge items that you don’t truly need or love. Keep working your way through one drawer a day until you’ve gone through every drawer. Each weekend tackle one cabinet and go through it using the same evaluation and purging process.
Place items where you’ll use them in the kitchen. Think about how you use your kitchen and plan how to layout your kitchen to make it work best for you and your situation. Put items near where you use them. For example, place glasses near the refrigerator and pots and pan near the stove. I always place the my dishes and silverware near the sink and dishwasher to make it easier to put clean dishes away.
Place like items together. In your fridge, drawers and cabinets keep all similar items together. This makes it easier to find what you need because all of that item will be in one place. It’s also easier for your family to put items away because each item is kept with similar items. It will also save you money because you won’t buy duplicate items just because you can’t find the one lost in your kitchen.
Use free and repurposed items to organize. In an effort to save money and save the landfill, I repurpose kitchen packaging like this mushroom container to organize my kitchen. I often use the plastic tray container that salad mixes come in to organize as well as lids and cardboard boxes. Check out my ideas for an organized kitchen with free and repurposed items that I shared here at Feeding Big two years ago.
File items rather than stack them. Whenever possible, file items rather than stacking them. When you file items, you can easily see and remove the exact item that you want rather than wrestling with a pile to figure out what’s hiding at the bottom. You’ll save money because you’ll be able to see exactly what you have and won’t unnecessarily buy duplicates.
Label leftovers. Always take the minute to label your leftovers with the contents and the date. This makes it more likely that you’ll eat the no longer mystery left-overs and will encourage you to eat leftovers before they go bad. I keep a roll of masking tape and marker in a drawer near my foil and plastic wrap so there’s no reason not to label leftovers.
Consolidate items and reduce packaging. Taking steps to reduce packaging like simply cutting the excess top of the bag off a bag of chips or cereal can increase the amount of room in your cabinets. Don’t keep two open packages of the same item – consolidated them into one container when possible.
