Today I want to talk about one of my favorite words – FREE (or inexpensive)!
I am going to focus on entertainments today.
Big and I have never been people to spend money without thinking about it. We don’t often go to the movies or eat out. It makes me crazy to think that it cost almost $10.00 per person to go to a movie! If you want popcorn, well you better sell your grandmother’s jewelry!
So here is a list of our top favorite free (or almost free) things to do!
1.) Movie night – Have you been to your local library lately? We have been able to find some pretty great movies lately! All for free! Have you ever considered swapping movies with a friend or a good neighbor? We have cable television, but no premium channels. This weekend all of the HBO channels were free – we taped movies like crazy!
2.) Game night – When my daughter was younger we began a tradition of Game Night. I began to buy games at yard sales and Goodwill. I have even traded games with other families. I would make a few snacks and we would have fun all night long!
3.) Library – There are so many free events at the library! Reading programs for young children, book clubs for adults. Our local library has a knitting club. All for FREE! Can I get a Woot Woot?
4.) Visit a park (take a picnic) – When was the last time you went to the park? Get out of the house, grab a picnic and spend the day outside. Parks offer so many things, hiking, biking, camping, educational programs, fishing and more. (Link for U.S. National Park Service – Click Here)
5.) Make and decorate cookies – make it into a contest! Who doesn’t love to get in the kitchen and have a little healthy competition?
6.) Go star gazing – Get off the sofa, grab a blanket and drive out of the city and gaze at the stars.
7.) Invite friends over and have a pot luck – What is more fun than having a few friends over? Think up a theme and have everyone bring a dish according to the theme. If you are a homeschooling family, think about having themes based on different countries – make it a learning experience!
8.) Check your local newspaper or look on the Internet about free things happening in your city. In Fredericksburg, where we live, there are always fun things to do for free. Big and I will attend the cities Friday Night Art Walk!
Well, there are some of my ideas. What does your family do for fun? I would love to hear about it!
I am a lover of great food, gardening, quilting and all things that make my house a home.
