Homemaking and gardening calendar for March 2016 is ready. I don’t know about you, but I am so ready for spring.
We have had a few nice days here in Central Virginia and I am so happy to see my Iris and Daylilies begin to show themselves. I have also been seeing some robins in the yard. I know spring is in it’s way.
Here are a few things that I will be up to over the next month:
Homekeeping and Gardening – Vegetables & Fruit
Now is the time to prepare your vegetable garden soil for planting. Add some peat moss, compost and perhaps some processed manure. Your beds will be ready for those little seed starters.
Many vegetables can be planted right now. Try planting eggplant, brussels sprouts, cauliflower, celery, leek onion and radish seeds. Have you tried growing your own potatoes? I have for the past few years. I built a potato tower and loved growing them that way. Read more about that at this post.
Later in the month, set out or seed spinach, chard and cauliflower.
As for fruit, you can plant your fruit trees, strawberries and blueberries.
Home keeping and Gardening – Yard and flower beds
Rake the leaves from your lawn and flower beds. You can leave a light layer if you think a frost will still come. Take a little time to prune the dead leaves and branches away from your daylillies, hostas, iris and peony plants.
March is a perfect time to fertilize your lawn. Check with your nursery to find the best fertilizer for the type of grass you have.
Dig, divide, and replant crowded summer and fall flowering perennials like agapanthus, garden phlox astilbe, aster, bleeding heart, coral bells, daylilies, and shasta daisies. Perennials perform best in well- drained soil with plenty of humus. Astilbe, hosta and bleeding heart will bloom in the shade.
Start weeding. I know, I know, this is not anyone’s favorite thing to do. If you start now, you can get ahead of the dreaded weeds.
Homekeeping and Gardening – Inside
Repot your houseplants. Make sure they have good soil and that you have cut off any leggy parts. This is a great time to do this – soon you will be too busy outside.
Check your smoke detectors. We all know they are important in protecting your family and pets. It only takes a few minutes to check them. While you are on the ladder – sweep away those cobwebs that have been in the corners of the ceiling all winter long.
Take a walk around the house and make a list of the small things that need to be done. Do you need to do some patch up painting? Do you need to repaint the door frames? I know I always add washing my baseboards to my spring cleaning list.
Well, that seems like a pretty long list of things to do this month. I know it will keep me busy! I will be sharing my Spring Cleaning Chore List in the next couple of days. Make sure you come back to print that off.
Here is the printable version of my March 2016 Homekeeping and Gardening Calendar. I hope you enjoy!

When you are done with all of your March homemaking and gardening chores why don’t you make one of these delicious desserts and treat yourself? You deserve it.
