Hello there, welcome to the Living Big on Less Money series. Each week, I share a money saving tip or recipe (with cost break down) and also offer a place for you to share your great tips! This week I am talking about granite counter cleaners!
When we purchased our current home, one of the things I fell in love with were the granite counter tops. I think they are so beautiful and I love cooking on them. I wanted to make sure I cared for them as best as I could, so I took a little time to educated my self about them. Cleaning granite is definitely not the same as cleaning a laminate countertop!
Granite does not do well with acidic (citrus-based) cleaners. The vinegar or citrus can actually cause what looks like “etching” on them. Even thought I love cleaning with vinegar, I held back on using it on my countertop. I purchased Method Granite cleaner and was pretty happy with it, but was really not happy with the price! One bottle was almost $5.00! Let me tell you, I go through a bottle of this cleaner about every two weeks, that equated $120.00 a month. There are a lot of other things I could do with that money.
So, I did some searching on cleaners and here is the basic recipe I found. I paid less than $.50 to make over 2 cups of cleaner. The essential oil is to cut the smell of the rubbing alcohol. I didn’t have any essential oil and didn’t want to go to the store to get it. I really don’t mind the smell at all. I hope you try this and enjoy it!
1/4 c rubbing alcohol
3 drops dishwashing liquid
2 cups water
5-6 drops essential oils
Place them in a cleaning bottle, mix gently and you are ready to go
