Cutting the cable cord is one way we recently began to save $100 a month. I know, that is a lot of money. It was easy really.
I love saving money and am always on the lookout for ways to save even more money. I have been reading about many people who had cut their cable bills and saved big. When our contract was due, I decided it was time to cut the cord.
I have to admit, I was a little nervous about it. After all, I didn’t want to miss any of my favorite shows. Also, I am not much for technology and didn’t want to struggle figuring out how to watch a television show or movie on a new device.
I always enjoyed being able to sit down with a mug of tea, turn the television on and watch a favorite show. I struggled when it came time to record a show or to watch it back. I know, sounds crazy doesn’t it? I guess I just never cared enough to pay much attention to it.
I started researching a few of the options that are out there for those of us who want to cut the cable cord.
Here are a couple things to think about before you attempt cutting the cable cord:
- Do you have the hardware you will need? We have a X-Box One, so we didn’t need to purchase anything else. You may have to purchase a media receiver
- Make sure the shows you love are available on the steaming service you decide on
- Contact your cable company and let them know what you are thinking of doing – they may offer you a deal you can’t refuse
- Do you mind waiting a day (or longer) to see the show you love
I love Amazon and I am a Prime Member and an affiliate. We became Amazon Prime members because we love the free and quick shipping we get, so I decided to start there.. Did you realize that Amazon Prime offers movies and TV shows. You have to pay a one year fee of $99.00 to join, but when you easily get that money back just by watching the movies they offer.
Did you know that Amazon Prime had music too? We just found out about it and have been enjoying all of the great songs Amazon has available for free to Prime members.
Another option that is out there is Hulu. I think this is my favorite. Right now, we are addicted to Empire. Oh My Gosh, we seriously go on binges and watch 3 episodes a night.
We not only get to watch our favorite shows, but they have great movies we can watch too. There are so many shows for us to watch – I think I would have to watch television 24 hours a day to see what they have available.
Hulu is only $7.99 a month. We can cancel at any time we would like. If you hate commercials, you can pay for the more expensive option. I don’t mind the commercials – it gives me a minute to go to the bathroom and get a snack!
Netflix is also an option for those of you looking to cut the cord. We don’t have Netflix, but my daughter does. She loves it and finds all of her favorite shows. She really enjoys the exclusive shows that they have.
One of the great things about any of these options is that I can watch shows on my computer while other family members are on the television. Heck, I can even watch a show on my phone if I want to.
Our old cable bill was $169.00, (this included internet service, which we had to keep). When we cut the cable, we dropped the bill to just over $50.00. Amazon Prime and Hulu cost about $17.00 a month – total savings close to $100 a month.
I can’t believe that one little thing like cutting our cable bill saves us around $1200 a year. The money that we save every month is going to pay extra on our car payments, so we will soon be free of that bill.
Please keep in mind if you are considering cutting the cable cord, that my savings may not be the same as yours. We had a high cable bill (no movie channels though) and cutting the cord really saved us money.
