Welcome to another Around The World In 80 Sundays. I am so excited this week. I get to introduce you to one of my good friends, Shay. I “met” Shay a few years ago. I used to write a blog called Home Matters, it was mostly about quilting. Shay is a prolific quilter and a very funny person.
I hope you will enjoy what she is sharing today. Please don’t trust her when she says to try Vegemite!
Here is Shay!
My name is Shay and I’m thrilled that Cynthia has asked me to guest post at Feeding Big and more today for her series of Around the World in 80 Sundays. I’m Australian, so get set for a lesson in Aussie food.

I’ve been given strict instructions not to showcase vegemite which stems from an unfortunate incident a few years ago where I sent Cynthia some to try and it almost killed her. She had to follow up the vegemite with a Tim Tam chaser to get the taste out of her mouth. And what made it even more hilarious is that she took video of herself trying vegemite. Funniest. Video . Ever.
Australians are a fairly laid back race. We don’t like a lot of fuss. Our food is a melting pot of every culture that’s made Australia home over the last 200 or so years. But we still like simple every day home cooking and fast and easy to whack together.
No kids party would be complete without this Fairy Bread. Made from actual crushed fairies. I’m kidding! Take some fresh white bread, slather some butter on and then whack sprinkles on top. Dead Easy.
And these
Chocolate crackles. Not made from crack …Just cocoa, rice bubbles, coconut , icing sugar and copha. They’re an Aussie Childhood Icon.
Tim Tams. The best biscuits ever.
For all you poor people who cant access Tim Tams you can make this cake. Even without the Tim Tams through the middle it tastes very much like the real deal.
The recipe for this sweet pile of delicious-ness is available over at Rasbberri Cupcakes who came up with the original idea. Genius!
Another purely Aussie meal is the Pie Floater . A meat pie floating in mushy peas and drowned in tomato sauce. Im going to confess I’ve lived here all my life and I’ve never been game to try one. The only people who eat them are people who are drunk or Tourists.
And these are lamingtons . They’re pretty much Australia’s national cake. I did a whole post including a recipe a few years back and you can find it here
So on to today’s recipe. I did a pop quiz amongst my friends to ask “If I ask you to describe a quintessential Australian meal what would you say?” almost universally everyone said a Aussie Barbie (that’s slang for Barbecue by the way ) or Lamb. Which was exactly what I was thinking. Aussies love BBQ’s and lamb, so I thought why not combine both of those things? So today I’m going to show you how to cook a really good roast lamb on the weber. It’s so easy anyone can do it. Assuming you can get your hands on some lamb. I hear it’s hard to get in some parts of the world which blows me away since I eat it about twice a week.
You’ll need these things.
A leg of lamb (mine was about 2 kilos or around 4.5 pounds), good quality sea salt, some fresh rosemary, your favourite meat rub (mine is called Nostimini) and some olive oil.
Rub all that stuff over the top of your lamb and let it sit in the fridge and soak up the flavours for an hour or two. Don’t cover it up in plastic wrap. Let it get nice and dry. You get crispier skin that way.
Who wants to stand out in 100 F heat cooking a barbecue? Barbecuing is mans work. So is taking out bins and changing light bulbs, but thats fodder for another post.
Hapless husband (who is used to being showcased and poked fun at on my blog ) chucked this on a hot weber thusly.
After about 90 minutes this is what you’ll have.. The lamb has been busy getting cooked and it needs a rest for 10 minutes before you carve it.
Ta Da ! This is what Sunday dinner looks like at my place.
Couldn’t resist – Vegemite is as Australian as it comes. I dare you try some.
If you’d like to visit me, my blog is called Quilting in my Pyjamas. There’s a whole lot of random going on over there. Drop in for a visit sometime. Bring Oreos.

You’re a crack up Shay! Have you ever made Fairy lamb, where you put sprinkles on the lamb just before serving? Delicious!!
I am so glad you stopped by! I have been friends with Shay for a long time and I love that she shared all of these goodies from Australia!
I popped over from Quilting in My Pyjamas .. the leg of lamb looks luscious. Tim Tams are the best. Vegemite .. well .. that’s something else. Perhaps I can develop a taste for it. Wish I’d thought of taking a video of me and my family tasting it.
Thea, you are correct about everything but the Vegemite looking good! I wish I could find the video – it cracked me up every time. Shay is a sweetie for sharing this. Thanks for stopping by!
Over from Shay’s blog and wondering, Shay – Where are the veggies on the roast dinner plate?
I wondered the same thing! I know you know that Shay is not a veggie person! I think we should convert her!
Thanks for stopping by!
Another one of Shay’s followers just checking out what she’s up to now. I really, really want to try Tim Tams.
Kate, Shay is such a sweetie to have helped me out with this post! She just cracks me up and I love her blog! I bet if you are nice, she will send you some Tim Tams! She sent me some. She also sent Vegemite! Beware!
Will definitely need to link to you for a future homeschool resource! Gotta keep your World Food posts in mind:) Thanks for sharing.
Thaleia, you are correct, this would make a good homeschool resource! I used to do things like this when my daughter was young!
This was a fun post!!! I LOVE the Fairy Bread idea! My kids would get a kick out of that!
Shay sent me from her blog! You just gotta go where she goes.
Love that most recipes are candy or cookies or cake! Lamb looks lovely, and the roast potatoes with gravy. Where’s the veggies? In the Vegemite? I’ll pass, thanks.
Hugs
